Freerolls are tournaments where the players can play a poker tournament for free. Most of the participants are amateur players who play more for fun than for the money, as the guaranteed prize sum is usually low compared to the number of players. There are other freerolls which are not completely free, as the access to these MTTs is restricted. Some examples for such freerolls are:
- New members freerolls (where only newly signed up players can participate)
- VIP freerolls (MTT for players which have earned themselves a certain number of poker room player points)
- Birthday freerolls
- Exclusive freerolls for members of certain communities
As there is a huge interest in playing freeroll tournaments, we have listed the advantages and disadvantages of these tourneys.
Five advantages of playing freerolls
- Playing poker without risking real money: For the more cautious persons, freerolls are a great way to play poker without the risk of losing own money. This is also a great way to start building up your online poker bankroll without having to cash real money in. Winning one major freeroll provides you with enough money to start playing some larger tournaments with the chance of cashing really big
- No need for bankroll management: Following a proper bankroll management (BRM) is a key factor to consider when playing for real money. Many great players went broke because they didn’t follow the BRM guidelines. When you play freerolls, you play tournaments for free. Therefore, you can ignore bankroll management as long as you don’t cash big
- Bad competition: The level of the players playing freerolls is novice. Even if you have only limited knowledge of poker strategies, you are at an advantage compared to the majority of the freerollers, who might not even have heard of “poker odds” or “starting hand charts”. Freerolls are the fishiest poker games in the Internet!
- Learning how to play online poker: Freerolls are also a great way to get familiar with playing poker online. If you don’t know the poker rules by heart, these free tournaments are a great for practising the rules. And even if you know the poker rules, freerolls are a good way to practice playing tournaments
- Getting familiar with a new poker room: Every online poker site has slightly different software. The layout varies, you might need some time to find and configure the preferred design and size of the poker tables, and keyboard shortcuts might be programmed differently to your previous poker room. Before risking your real money poker dollars, playing a few freerolls might be a good idea.
Five disadvantages of playing freerolls
- Little money to be won, even for outstanding players: Due to the tournament structure, it is not possible to earn a significant amount of money playing freerolls. Usually, you have player fields in freerolls in the area of 3000 players competing for $300. The average amount won per player in such a poker tournament is therefore only $0.10. Even if you win such a tournament, you won’t get rich and you will still have to go to work the next day
- Low hourly win rate: Due to the poor ratio between the number of players and price money awarded, your hourly rate, even if you are a great player, will be low. Some freerolls last for five or more hours before they are finished, and even if you finish one as a winner, your hourly rate will probably not be much higher than $10
- Only few places are paid: In regular real money tournaments, usually about 10% of all players will win at least some money. In freerolls, due to the large player fields and low prize sum, a smaller share of players will make it into the money. This can be frustrating for average players, as they will only cash in about one out of 20 freerolls
- Difference to real money tournaments: As many recreational players participate in freerolls and because nobody risks his own money, freerolls can only be compared in a limited way to real money tournaments. You probably have already seen players seeing every flop regardless of their hole cards (“any two cards can win”) or players going all-in every round (double-up strategy). This means that once you decide to play tournaments for real money, you will have to adapt your play and there is a risk, that you take bad habits from playing freerolls, such as underestimating the level of your competition
- Limited choice of freerolls: If you are only playing at one poker room, you might only have the choice of two or three freerolls each day. If you cannot play at that particular time of the day, you won’t be able to play in these freerolls. Furthermore, freerolls tend to be booked out quickly. One great way to negate this disadvantage is to sign up at various poker rooms, which will give you a much greater choice of freerolls
